The world of stand-up comedy and American television is in mourning. Alex Duong passed away on Saturday, March 28, at the age of 42, after a year-long battle with a rare and aggressive cancer , as reported by USA Today . This sudden loss came after a rapid decline in his health. Hospitalized at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica after suffering septic shock , the comedian had been “fighting for his life” for several hours when his family announced his death . “It is with extremely heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Alex, who passed away peacefully this morning, surrounded by love and family,” read the statement released by his family.
His family then added: “He was at peace and, thankfully, no longer in pain. [His wife] Christina and [his daughter] Everest were able to see him last night, and he was conscious enough to say goodbye to his little girl, whom he cherished every moment since her birth. We are devastated, but deeply grateful for the support, prayers, and generosity you have all shown during this unimaginable ordeal. Your support remains vital as Christina and Everest face the days ahead and plan a beautiful celebration of his life . “
A very rare and aggressive cancer
Diagnosed in early 2025 with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, an extremely rare soft tissue tumor in adults, Alex Duong’s life was turned upside down in just a few months. A worrying swelling in his left eye revealed the disease, which quickly caused him to lose sight in that eye. Despite surgery to remove the tumor blocking blood flow to the optic nerve, the cancer spread to his spine. Weakened by harsh treatments, he had been bedridden since last February. Faced with medical bills exceeding $400,000, his family, Hilarie and Gregg Steele, launched an online fundraiser to support him. Meanwhile, the stand-up comedy community rallied around him, notably organizing a benefit show in Los Angeles last August.

Despite his illness, Alex Duong wanted to acknowledge this outpouring of support via his social media. He wrote: “Comedians always stand together when times are tough. We know how hard it is to struggle, to fight, and to survive in this industry, just to be able to keep telling jokes and growing. It’s a beautiful thing to see in this world, truly .” Before his illness forced him to stop, the comedian was preparing a tour across 41 states, a tour that will now never take place.
Actor Donnie Wahlberg, with whom he had starred in the series Blue Bloods , even encouraged him to consider a future spin-off. A member of the SAG-AFTRA union since 2009, Alex Duong had made numerous screen appearances, notably in Dexter, Everybody Hates Chris, 90210, The Young and the Restless , and Pretty Little Liars. He had also written for the Netflix show Historical Roasts and continued to perform on stage, while also working at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles since 2021. Alex Duong is survived by his wife and their 5-year-old daughter. A memorial service is expected to be held soon.
